Answer for Trivia of month: Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is one of the most common phobias in America. Claustrophobia is characterized by panic that is a result of being in enclosed spaces.

A phobia is a form of anxiety disorder that leads to an irrational fear of a certain situation or object. The individual may be claustrophobic or the claustrophobia may be a part of a generalized a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). A prolonged or intense anxiety can lead to phobia.

Claustrophobia is designated as a situational phobia, because it is triggered by a certain situation.

Causes of Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia can develop from either a traumatic childhood experience (such as being trapped in a small space during a childhood game), or from another unpleasant experience later on in life involving confined spaces (such as being stuck in an elevator).

When an individual experiences such an event, it can often trigger a panic attack; this response then becomes programmed in the brain, establishing an association between being in a tight space and feeling anxious or out-of-control. As a result, the person often develops claustrophobia.

Symptoms of Claustrophobia

When a person with claustrophobia finds herself in a restricted space, her body responds in certain ways.

Claustrophobia symptoms can include:

  • sweating
  • accelerated heartbeat
  • nausea
  • fainting
  • light-headedness
  • shaking
  • hyperventilation
  • a fear of actual imminent physical harm

Some common situations that can cause anxiety in claustrophobia sufferers include:

  • Being inside a room: the individual will look for an exit, for example, at a movie theatre
  • Being inside a car: the individual will avoid driving on the highway or major roads where there is heavy traffic
  • Being inside a building: the individual will avoid taking elevators
  • Being at a party: the individual will stand near a door
  • Being on an airplane
  • While undergoing an MRI or CAT scan (also referred to as MRI claustrophobia and CAT scan claustrophobia, respectively)

In extreme cases, the very sight of a closed door can lead to feelings of anxiety in the individual.

Claustrophobia can have crippling social and psychological effects since the patient will often avoid situations in which she thinks she will have an anxiety attack, leading to isolation and depression.

Claustrophobia Treatment

There is no cure for claustrophobia, however, there are several forms of treatment that can help an individual control her condition.

Treatment for claustrophobia can include behavior therapy, exposure therapy, drugs or a combination of several treatments.

Behavior therapy includes identifying trigger points and recognizing that one's reactions to these triggers are learned instead of natural; through visualization and positive thinking, the individual learns to disassociate feelings of danger with the confined space.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a type of behavior therapy that deconstructs the individual's preconceived view of reality, reducing the anxiety provoked by a specific situation or setting.

Flooding is a type of exposure treatment in which the individuals exposed to a situation until the anxiety attack passes; a less extreme form of exposure treatment is counter-conditioning. Counter-conditioning includes behavior therapy, as the individuals taught visualization and relaxation techniques before being slowly reintroduced to the trigger situation.

Medications prescribed to help treat claustrophobia include anti-depressants and beta-blockers, which help to relieve the heart pounding often associated with anxiety attacks.

Alternative claustrophobia treatments include regression hypnotherapy, in which hypnotherapy is used to remember the traumatic event that led to the individual's claustrophobia. The patient is taught to see the event with adult' eyes, which helps to decrease the sense of panic that it has instilled into their minds.

THE IRANIAN NAVY ENCOUNTER

MT RUBY EXPRESS ARABIAN SEA
PANAMA 16 February 2007
“THE IRANIAN NAVY ENCOUNTER”
At 1600 LT MT RUBY EXPRESS had anchored and finished her engine offshore, outside the territorial waters of Iran in the vicinity of Hormuz Strait, ready to take her bunker as instructed. By the time the bunker ship made fast, we saw two Iranian navy patrol boat coming towards us and they were flashing light signals. At 1720 LT bunker hose has been connected while the C/E was in the bunker ship to check and confirm the sounding. The order from the bridge was to standby and wait for master’s order. Approximately 30 minutes later, the two Navy patrol boat was so near, one was at stand still while the other proceeded to aft part of Ruby Express and encircled the ship. We saw flashing lights (presume to be from their camera). Then suddenly we hear over the radio that these Iranian Navy personnel were to board Ruby Express and to the bunker ship. They choose the bunker ship first as it has very easy accessed to board. By the time they were on board the crew meet them were kicked and pushed and headed amid ship at gun point at their back and all crew were mustered at amid ship except the Master.

REACTIONS!!!

CHIEF OFFICER
Thanks GOD we’ve survived this horrible experienced! A lot of shouting, pushing and shoving suffered from these men in uniform, worst, there were even some kicking and gun pointing in the head. I feel sorry for myself and the rest of the officers and crew especially for those who were being hit. When it was our turn to be boarded I, being the Chief Officer and SSO together with boatswain and 2 deck watches met these guys on the gangway to assist their boarding. Unfortunately, our group was the first one to taste the rudeness of these bastards! Upon boarding, they shouted on us and instructed to go in one place with guns cocked and aimed to us! The ordinary seaman on watch was so scared and shocked, so he was not able to follow their orders quickly that led to the kicking incident.
To cut the story short, we were treated like criminals. All crew were summoned on deck near port gangway, ordered to sit down on a cold deck in two lines facing forward, hands on the head and bowed. We stayed there for more than an hour with two Navy continuously guarding, guns aimed to us. From what I observed with there eyes and actuations, these men were so obsessed with their belief and they’ve got no compassion in killing someone just for their cause.
ARNULFO G. COLLADO
Chief Officer

SECOND OFFICER
As a Second Mate on board M/T Ruby Express, and during our stay when vessel anchored, Strait of Hormuz International waters dated 14 February 2007 for bunker, an Iranian Navy came on board to inspect the vessel and when they came on board they ordered us to come out on main deck by extremely pushing, extremely shouting and pointing out a gun that I could not believed that they are not doing in a diplomatic way. They treat us like a criminal.
With this statement, I hope I can voice out what I had felt and I hope in the future I will forget with that bad/traumatic experience.
ROY CANILANZA
2nd Officer

3rd OFFICER
At 2020 L.T. as duty officer of the watch, Iranian navy board the vessel. I was in a little bit shocked because they running on deck heading to accommodation. Then a few minute pass crew are running on deck followed by the Iranian navy aiming and pointing their gun to the crew, those crew who is running slow because of the slippery deck they give some kick.
Behind all of these, I thank God because there is no bad thing happen on that time.
NONITO H. GRULLA JR
3RD Officer

3rd ENGINEER
I 3EO Joel J. Almazan was one of the apprehended crew by the Iranian Navy, who comes aboard our vessel with high powered guns.
This Iranian navy who comes aboard threated us like a prisoner and or a terrorist. I was in the engine control room with the other engine personnel when two Iranian Navy comes and pointing there guns and shouting towards us and we didn’t understand what they are saying. They pushed us and shouting with there guns pointing towards us while going upstairs. We come out to accommodation with all the engine personnel they still shouting on us to move faster and I saw some deck crew who was sitting amidships with some Iranian Navy pointing their guns towards their back. So, I think that we all in great dangers. I joined my fellow shipmates sitting on deck which is the weather is a little bit cold. I just sit there and close my eyes and pray that this problem maybe solve sooner.
I am hoping that this kind of problem will not happen again in the near future…
JOEL J. ALMAZAN
3rd Engineer

ELECTRICIAN
As we witness the abusive and cruel treatment of the crew everybody were scared. It comes to my mind the same treatment will be use to us when it will be our turn to be boarded, true to my belief it happened to us. As engine crew were all at engine room three navy fully armed and guns ready to fire comes to engine room commanding everybody to go up screaming and pushing every crew they come across at gun point in our back, they brought us at amid ship were deck crew mustered. So, the whole complement of Ruby Express sitting down at amidship hopeless but hopeful.
So, this is it, scared but not demoralized s stayed calm and vigilant and still hoping for the best but prepare for the worst case scenario. At this juncture, I have recited the verses of PSALM 23 to ease my tense to gain strength and courage. And to my astonishment after almost an hour of negotiations of our very own Master Capt. Milenko Pahor the hostility of the un-wanted visitor who created this un-solicited engagement had ceased and set us free. Thank you Lord.
My point of view to avoid the same incident to happen again, a proper coordination between concerned party including the supposed host government authority – must be observe.
AGUSTIN E. DACERA
Electrician

BOATSWAIN
‘God help me” this is the word that came out to my mouth when the group of Iranian Navy come onboard our vessel and they treat all us like criminals. They were pointing all the times there heavy firearms on us while seated on deck.
I feel so very nervous because I thought that was the end of my life and I’m thinking of my family that time. I can’t forget this traumatic situation because this is the first time it happened to my life. I’m thinking about it the whole night and how about my family if something bad happened to me. .
Thanks God you did not let something bad happened to anybody especially to me.
NICHOL GOOPIO
Boatswain

DECK CADET
At 14 February 2007, Chief officer call all crew standby for Iranian navy boarding, we are standby in crew reception Iranian arrived, they are immediately shouting and pointing us a gun, shouting us to go to main deck, I’m so scared, thinking twice what I’m going to do because they are pushing my back the gun pointing my head while we are running up to main deck, when we are on the main deck near Port Gangway they would like us to set down in a wet and cold steel deck its too long we all felt very cold and shaking because of cold nature and the guns pointing towards us.
Until now I can’t forget this very traumatic experience, I thought that is my last time to stay in this world alive because of this suffering done of the saddest Iranian navy.
HECTOR DEL OESTE JR.
Deck cadet

PUMPMAN
On the day of the of the heart, valentines Day, we are celebrating on that very peaceful Day, but suddenly heartless Iranian navy came on board ruin every thing on that special day. The treated us like animals. Pointing guns towards us, shouted on us pushed us away thinking that could be our last day, valentines day, their barbaric act is truly unacceptable.
DINDO G. GUZMAN
Pumpman

A/B 2
It happened on my watch that the Iranian navy came on board and they are shouting and told us to set on one place treating toward. A moment later I saw the Iranian navy kicking one of the crew, pointing their gun with us cock and ready to fire. That happened I was frightened, shaking and getting nervous and I thought it was the end of my life. I think this my first bad experience in my life that I never forget. The Iranian navy are unpolite.
CALIXTO ARABE

A/B 3
During our stay in Hormuz Strait, outside the territorial limit of Iran for bunkering, it so happened that the Iranian navy come onboard for inspections. I was in the day room that time when they came onboard. Then they came inside cocking their guns, ordering us to move outside and pushing us extremely, shouting and pointing their guns on us until we reached the main deck. They let us sit on a cold deck for an hour watching us by their guns. I was so scared and shocked at that time and I have so many thoughts in my mind wondering what will happen and what they will do to us? They treat us like criminals instead of doing in a diplomatic way.
Hoping that this traumatic experienced would not happened again.
TIRSO B. RURAC

O/S 1
Good day I’m O/S Carisma, Eramil C. crew of Ruby express, we are in the international waters near Iran territory, we are about to commence ship to ship bunkering on that time we see Iranian navy ship circling around us and we don’t know why, we are not in their territory but in few minute they to go on board and inspect our ship, Me, Bosun, AB and Chief mate are on deck at that time. I am duty at that time I lower the Port Gangway immediately and see that they are carrying heavy fire arms and ready to shot on anybody. They started to shout at loud on us, we were scared and confused on that time then we walk slowly going to the accommodation but 1 guy shout on me pointing with M14 into my face and shout, he pushed me hard and then kick me on my leg, it’s very painful I cannot even walk, it’s so painful but I try to walk because he might pull the trigger on my head and some of crew member are very scared too, one of crew member was push to the door by Iranian soldier by their gun, very tragic its happen to us, they threat us like an animal pushing, kicking shouting on us and like criminal while we were not doing anything wrong. It’s a terrible experience we thought it’s our end. All of us sent outside seating on deck some of crew member are in casual attire it’s very cold outside they confiscate remove our hat facing facing forward we remain setting for one hour on deck, our captain try to communicate because he worry they might kill us on that situation. They can kill us all in one pull of the trigger, then after they completed their agenda, they left, wow after shouting, pushing us, pointing their gun, KICKING ME and endangering our life, what kind of human being they are, Thinks God we are still alive but it will remain in our mind that they abuse our rights.
ERAMIL CARISMA

O/S 2
When we are in the international water territory near Iran, our ship conducted ship to ship for bunkering when I saw two Iranian navy ships approaching our vessel turning around our ship then a few minutes passed I went to my cabin. I was wondering Cadet call me in the telephone and he said, come to reception immediately, I quickly went down and when I opened the door a high power fire arms pointing on me, they shout move out 2x, I am really scared because I don’t know why they are pushing my neck using their guns going outside and I put my hands on my head look likes surrendered criminal, then they continuous shouting to move. We formed one lane going to main deck and seating on deck forming two lines, they are threat like a criminal, they even pushed some crew, others were kicked, shouting etc. Even were already seating on deck they are still pointing their fire arms.
Of all the crew except the captain because he stayed in the bridge to communicate to their leaders. It’s the terrible experience I thought it’s our end and I’m really concerned with my family. How come if we die here? I feel so nervous and I’ve got some phobia. After the completed their agenda thy left us and return to their vessel.

RODOLFO BALDONADO

MOTORMAN 1
First of all I have a question, why the motto of seafarers is safety first and written in front of accommodation of all ship, that time no more safety first of cargo ship and most especially the life of the crew, at that time, I thought this the last time in world because of the attitude of Iranian navy, this very dangerous and first time happen in my hall life and may be I’ll never forget when I’m living in this world.
RUBEN TACULA

MOTORMAN 2
At my age, that was worst experienced in my life. Everybody were scared thinking that “that is the end of our lives”. I never experienced this situation before that’s why I’m very scared especially when they point the gun to me. I just close my eyes and pray that they will not kill anybody.
I hope I will never experience this situation again.

The pepperoni pizza in Ventspils Latvia

It’s nice to go ashore and before you go back to the ship you must full your self or eat something outside. Food in the ship and food outside have lot's difference. The food in the ship is nice and delicious but if the cook have a pacham thing (pachamba chamba) we are dead meet in our whole contract. If the cook has a golden hand we will be happy for the rest of our contract that we are forcing the cook to extend his contract hehehe.
I just want to buy at the grocery to eat something because they don’t have Mc Donald fast food in the surroundings. Then the 4th engr. (He was my batch mate in our school). He told me bunkmate come we will eat in the restaurant. When he told me that we will eat to the restaurant I was on shy mode type so I just say no thank bunkmate its ok for me not to eat I will just buy at the grocery. Then he eagerly wants me to come with him so I just say ok bunkmate I will come together with you to eat in the restaurant. We enter the restaurant inside the mall and all of the Russian costumers look on us. Then the waitress gives us the menu and we are in soooo deep in shocked when we see the menu. We were just like kids that don’t know how to read. All words are written in the menu was are in Russian language so we just scratched our heads. We look carefully in the menu if there is in English word then we see the pepperoni. We decided to have this pepperoni but we are in confuse if what kind of pepperoni is in the menu. My bunkmate orders the pepperoni and some soda. My bunkmate asked the waitress if the pepperoni can accommodate 3 persons. The waitress speaks in russian with a hand language and some little English. She says like this yezzz 3 perzon ok. Then we ok too hehe. The waitress gives the soda to us and we are in deep shocked to the price. The price of the soda is 0.50 almost one US dollar and its small like the coke sakto. 10 minutes pased the pepperoni pizza was serve. The pepperoni pizza was large as a plangana it’s very very big. Thin crust, lots of cheese and we are looking for the pepperoni but we only see the fresh siling labuyo toppings. We ask to the waitress where is the pepperoni she point the siling labuyo and says that pepperoni to us. My bunkmate asks for a small plate. My bunkmate says like this can we have some small plate pls? Then the waitress says huh? My bunkmate hand language like this aaaaa sssmaallll plate pls. Then the waitress says huh again. Then my crew mate just says PLATITO BOBO!! Then the waitress understands the platito and she give us platito hehe.
We are crying while we eat the pizza because it’s too hot for us. The Russian just ignore the hot spicy of the chili’s but for us it’s a terrible mistake to order the pizza. Then our beverage is soda so if we drink the soda while eating the pizza the spice of the pizza will react to the acid of the soda making the spicy more spicier. We learn our lesson and the lesson is DO NOT ORDER THE FOOD IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS WRITTEN IN THE MENU AND IF THE WAITERSS DONT KNOW HOW TO SPEAK IN FULL ENGLISH. : )

Dead by donut

Dunkin donuts also know as pasalubong ng bayan in the Philippines. In United States the Dunkin donuts motto is American buy at dunkin. On my 2nd ship (Maple Express) as ordinary seaman this Dunkin donuts are very famous onboard the ship. The representatives in our cargo in Boston Ma are always bringing Dunkin donuts for the cargo control room (pasalubong inshort). Our chief mate in Maple Express has a bad habit in donuts. He brings all the donuts in his cabin or hides the donuts and he is not giving any single donut to the crew. Then one of the crew writes at the gangway of the port “Dead by Donut”. The representative of the cargo saw the “dead by donut” and thinking why dead by donut? He just laughs at the dead by donut.
If we can’t have a donut inside the ship we will produce by our self’s. We buy on our own money to have a donut aboard ship. 1 dozen cost 9 US dollars and its fine for us to buy the donut even if you imagine that in the Philippines the donut cost 120 pesos only. You must hide the donut in your bag when you are coming back to the ship. There are crew who do not buy but they just ask for your donut. If you will not hide you donut, your one dozen donuts will last for 1 minute so you must be magpagdamot if you want to save you donuts for days.
Our chief mate asks me if I will go ashore. I told to my chief mate that I will go ashore sir after I finish my duty. He lends money to me to buy him a donut. Then we go out together with messmam and its very cold outside because its winter time in Boston. We arrive at the donut store and they are already close. We seen form the out side that they are throwing all the donuts that not been sold. We knock at the door to please them to buy donut even they are close. The girl point at the drive thru so we go to the drive thru of the donut shop. The girl told us that they are already close. I please hert If I can buy some donuts because our ship is leaving. Then he just tells me this is drive thru. I told her (I look at my surroundings) yes I know this is drive thru but can we order because you’re already close. But this is drive thru the girl says then I answered am I’m very sorry I don’t have a car but can we order even we don’t have a car? The messman laugh at me but I stare at him so he just keeps his laughing in low voice. The girl asked how many do you want to buy? I told the girl 2 dozen pls. She told me I don’t have 2 dozen but her partner is still throwing all the donuts in the trash can. I told the girl ok 1 dozen she reply again I don’t have 1 dozen. Then I asked her how many available do you have? Then the girl replied I have 3 pieces. I just pause for a while and talk Filipino so she can’t understand. SIRA ULO PALA TO TOL EH!! NAGTATANONG KUNG ILAN TAPOS 3 PIRASO LANG PALA SUNTUKIN KO KAYA TO PARA MATAUHAN!!. I bought the 3 pieces and leave the donut shop. My crew mate told me that the drive thru have lot’s of coin. We pick up all the coin and count it. The total of the coins are 10 US dollar and we can buy phone card (5 Dollars each) to call in our family. Then my crew mate told me that how about if we want a donut we can wait to throw the donut outside and we can get all the donuts. I just laugh at him and told my crew mate. Nasa manila tayo di tayo nababasurero tapos dito dahil sa donut magbabasurero tayo. Then we laugh like hell hehehehehe..

Go ashore in Ventspils Latvia

We heaved up our anchor in Latvia anchorage area at 2300 hrs. We stay at anchor for 1 week because the cargo is not yet ready to load. 0000 hrs the pilot board Ruby express and stand by was announced. The New Ordinary seaman called me in my cabin and told me stand by fore and aft so I quickly fix my self and wear my battle gear coverall. I was assigned in forward part of the ship and I’m assisting the 2 ordinary seaman, able seaman, bosun together with our deck officer chief mate. Deck cadet has many limitations on working and maneuverings. I was ordinary seaman before so its hard for me to adopt the cadet job description but I love the job description of deck cadet because it’s relaxing and it’s not hard as the rating. My shipping company assigned me as senior deck cadet because I’m already have a deck officer license and according to there rules if there ex cadet have a license they are not allowed to be a rating but a senior cadet.
We made all fast at 0400 hrs and I’m so tired because I only have 1 hour sleep. I decided to go to my cabin and rest for a while. I woke up 0900 hrs to go to work for 1000hrs. But the bosun go back to work at 1200 hrs so I just rest again to my cabin till 1200 hrs. The ports are allowing seaman to go ashore so I decided to go outside because the seaman club has internet connection. I, 2nd mate, motorman and os go ashore at 1630 hrs. It’s a 30 minute walk to get there in seaman’s club. We enter the seaman’s club and it’s just like a ghost town. Large seaman’s building club but there is no seaman inside. The internet connection was jammed so we decided to go to the town. It takes 10 minutes ride to be in town. We change our money and the currencies of Ventspile are too high. 100 US dollars are equivalent 46 Ventspils money. We cannot buy a thing if we will not change our money so we change it even it’s too high.
I and messman roam around the mall, nice mall for a little town. We see some people feeding wild ducks and goose outside the mall. Then the messman decided to go to mobile phone shop to window shop some mobile phone. The shops have a Russian girl costumer and I was outside the shop. The messman called me outside like this ( TOL! GRABE YUNG BABAE OH NAKA T-BACK!!!! TIGNAN MO BILIS!!). I just run to him and told to my crewmate (tol ok lang na magtagalog ka kasi di nila maiintindihan nyan pero yung t-back baka maintindihan nila yan. Maski di sila masyado sa English pero tingin ko alam nila ang t-back. Sya lang naman ang babaeng costumer dito eh baka sabihin manyak tayo (sabay tingin din ako sa babae naka t-back nga hehehe)). The group was decided to go back to the ship at 1000hrs so the assembly time in the meeting place in front of the mall is 0900 hrs. While the service man are driving he asked some question to me even he is having a hard time to speak in English. (My friend you like jigy jigy (means if I want to have a girl). I told him no thanks I don’t like girls even it’s blonde. My friend why no like girls blonde cheap only US 100 dollars my friend. I told him that sorry my friend I really don’t like to get a girl even its blonde I just want to be honest to my girl friend. The service man say’s You have wife? I told him no my friend a girlfriend I have a girlfriend not wife. Then the service guy says very good my friend you honest to your girlfriend. Then after he finishes asking me about that jigy jigy thing we arrived at the gate of the terminal and we say to the service guy. Thank you my friend I hope we can see each other again. Nice meeting you my friend!!

My journey Begins

Friday, June 13, 2008

0200 hrs May 25, 2008, I woke up to prepare my self and pack all my things to join my next vessel assignment as senior deck cadet. The joining port is Le Harve France. I feel sad to leave our country and left someone behind (my wifey).
I arrive at the airport around 0300hrs. I was looking and searching to my crewmate in the airport. Half happy and half sad are playing to our minds. We board the plane at around 0630 hrs bound to Hong Kong via Cathay Pacific. The two of us are deeply thinking if we are happy no not. We just make our self busy while inside the plane to ease the sadness. New faces and new crewmate are waiting for us thinking if the harmonious relationships are ok onboard the ship.
After 1 hour and 45 minutes sitting inside the plane we arrive at the Hong Kong international airport around 0800 hrs gate 30. This is my third time to visit Hong Kong international Airport. Our next flight will be going to Le Harve France at 1000 hrs via Air France. We proceed to the ticketing booth of the Air France to claim our boarding pass. We walk from gate 30 to gate 35 to board the Air France Boeing 777. This is my first time to ride Air France and it’s really nice and comfortable inside the Plane. It takes us 12 hours traveling from Hong Kong to Le Harve France. The highest altitude of the plane was 40,000 feet and the speed over the ground is about 400 km/hr. The France and Hong Kong have 6 hours difference from each other. The zone description of the Hong Kong is -8 and France is -2.
We arrive in France International Air port at around 1800 hrs (France local time). The immigration in airport holds us for 2 hours to scan us and to give us Visa (transit visa last for 2 days). The agent pick us up in the immigration and told us that we will be staying over night in hotel because the ship is not yet arrived in there port in Le Harve. The ship will be arriving tomorrow morning (June 26, 2008 at 0400 hrs). It take us 2 hours and 30 minutes land travel going to hotel in the city and because of tiredness of long travel I just sleep in the car and I didn’t notice that we already arrive in the Hotel. We enter the hotel and the agent speak in French to the bell boy and the bell boy told us that we bring our things to our room and go back to him and he will prepare a dinner for us. (French dinner).

Good morning France

I woke up 0800 hrs (June 26, 2008) in Inter Hotel France. My room is located in 3rd floor. The whole hotel is covered with wi-fi system and unluckily my laptop don't have a wireless LAN. It requires additional device for wireless system. I need a USB flash drive wireless LAN to access to there wi-fi system in the hotel. I don’t like to turn on the television because all of the channels are in French language (nose bleed). I take a bath and prepare my self to go out to the hotel to see the beautiful morning of France.
My crewmate and I take our breakfast at 0830hrs. We ask for the staple food of the Filipino’s “Rice” unfortunately they don’t have rice but they have lots of lot’s of French bread. The waiter serve us a hot chocolate and he told to us that the breakfast is a buffet type so we can get what we what and eat what we want. Cheese, hard boiled eggs, and cold cuts these are available in the buffet. I can’t full my self up because we are eating bread (French bread sigurado yung utot ko amuy French bread narin) not rice.
After we finish our breakfast we rest for a while and we are planning to go out to the Hotel. It’s pretty cold outside so we decided to wear our jackets to feel warm while walking in the street. We take picture to the chairs, bridge, pigeons, road etc. This is the privileged of a seaman. We can travel the work free and to see all beautiful places around the world. This is my first time to visit this place (Le harve France). The place is beautiful but there are some negatives about this place. The people here don’t know how to speak in English language some can speak but a little bit only. So it’s difficult to ask them what or where you are. They just speak on there language that all.

Go ashore in Klaipeda

May 31, 2008
To tell you frankly I don’t want to go out from the ship (shore leave). Almost all of my crew mate’s want are girls. These countries have super beautiful girls on earth. In seaman term we call all the girls here in Klaipeda are Barbie dolls. Super pretty and super cream skin and all of there hair are blond. I don’t know how much it will cost but I don’t have interest from that. What I want is to buy a mini car (hot wheels) to add to my collections. I really love to buy this car and bring home in the Philippines. I’m proud to show my friends that I have a collection of mini car and I bought it in other country that I’ve been thru.
Our ship was a Product tanker and we are loading unleaded gasoline. All of my crew mates are already goes ashore even the engr’s. are already went ashore. Luckily they did not pick up any Barbie girls out side because it’s Monday. They go ashore at Friday night searching for Barbie girls. The Taxi driver told them that there are many Barbie girls when it’s Saturday and Sunday. In that case I decided to go out to the last day in port. I was actually alone to go ashore and I asked for the sketch in the guy where aboard our ship selling mobile phones. He told me that I can ride bus number 6 to go to the biggest mall in town. You can buy my ticket bus because they don’t accept US dollars outside. You must change your money in the changing money in the mall. Then the motorman was planning to going out to so we decided to be bodies when going out. We walk about 300 meter from the ship to the bus stop. We enter the bus and we give the ticket to the bus driver and told us *&^%$#$%^&&*&…. (Nose bleeds). He doesn’t know how to speak in English so he just shows us that we must make a hole in our ticket in the ticket whole machine. After a couple of kilometers the bus load passenger in the street and guess what all of there hair was blonde. I think I and my crew mate, we’re the only passenger in the bus who has black hair. Now I see the Barbie dolls that my crew mates told to me but they are not a call girl. These Barbie dolls are the college girls and they look nice but one thing I notice to the entire passengers in the bus. They have (ang amuy grabe as in ang lalakas ng putok nila at saka ang baho nila). The weather is little bit cold.
We see the Akropolis billboard and that is the biggest mall in the town. We go down in the bus stop and my crew mate told me that he wants to go to the seamans club. I told him ok we go to the seamans club and after that we go to the mall. We walk and follow his map. Then we see a yellow building and this building have a sign baras. My crew mate told me that I think this is not a seaman club because it is baras means bar. So I just nod then my crew mate ask to the guys that if they know where is the seamans club (aglupos number 5). They told to us over there in the other street. We already walk about 15 minutes and still there is no sign of semans club until we reach a construction area and is very scary. We might kill in that area without noticing by police men. I told to my crew mate I think we are lost and maybe we just go to the mall and we already waste 30 minutes. He told me ok we go to the mall (bastard crew mate engot kasi eh nagdudunung dunungan kasi eh).
Then suddenly yung baras na nakita namin yun pala yung seamans club how engot talaga tong kasama ko. We enter the semans club and I change my 9 euro to litas (money of Klaipeda). 28 litas was the equivalent of my 9 euro. I keep the 10 litas paper money for souvenir. I ask if they have internet connection and they told me that it’s free of charge to use the internet in the 2nd floor. I run for joy because I can see my blog, friendster and especially to chat my wifey. After 30 minutes of surfing the net my crew mate told me that we can now back to the ship. I agree because I’m tired and I want to rest for a while before I go back to my duty. We are waiting on the bus stop then my crew mate told me that he wants to buy something. Then I asked I thought we will go back to the ship then now you want to buy something? I just control my self and agree to what my crew mate said to me. Then I remember that I have 18 litas left on my pocket. I can buy a souvenir. Then my crew mate told me that before he buys something he wants to know the price and convert it to US dollars so that he cannot waste his money. I agree to him and I say lets go, lets go inside the mall. Then he computes and converts all the items he wants to buy. Then ask me like this… Hey. Maybe I can borrow your litas money because the money changer is too far from here and we will not waste any time. I just say to my mind (*&&^$$^&%$#&^# I can’t buy what I want because he will borrow it). As a professional I just lend my money to him and he will just exchange his money later to return my litas money.
He buys what he wants and I cannot buy what I want. I just have 2 litas left good enough to buy mini cactus plant. When he give my money litas back I just told him that I want to eat in mc donalds. Great idea! We eat because I’m hungry for now. I order big mac with large fries and soda. My crew mate ordered just a cheese burger and regular coke and fries. He told me that it’s enough for him madali kasi syang mabusog. Sorry to say that we are having difficulty of ordering in the cashier. The Cashier lady doesn’t know how to speak in English. Luckily the manager knows how to speak in English but a little bit only.
After eating we go back to the ship and it’s time for dinner. Then my crew mate want to eat dinner in the mess hall then I asked him that I though you have enough for the cheese burger. He told me that I get hungry because we walk far. I just ignore him then my other crew mate told me that everybody in the ship don’t want with him when going ashore because kuripot daw and wala sa ayos kasama. On my part I see the kuripot and wala saayos side of my fellow crew mate. Next time when I go ashore I will not go out with him. It’s a lesson for me and I don’t want to destroy my next shore leave.

First drill in Ruby Express

June 8, 2008 we’re in anchorage area in Latvia. Waiting for there announcement if we will be berthed this day. I woke up around 0630 hrs. Fix my self at that moment. I‘m planning to clean the stairs form D deck to A deck and after I clean the stairs I was planning to go to bridge to study and ask 3rd mate about the safety of the ship and his job description. I was planning to relive him when he finishes his contract. Before I board Ruby express I already complete all my requirement, papers and certificate. Incase they need 3rd officer onboard I will be picked up because I’m a 3rd mate license.
Our old man decided to have a drill today and he chooses to have an Abandon ship drill and Fire in the pump room. Drills make crew onboard the ship to be alert and they can manage to do there obligation incase of emergency. The signal for abandon ship is 7 short blasts and 1 long blast of ships whistle or general alarm. The signal for fire or emergency is 1 long blast of the ship whistle or general alarm.1015 hrs the alarm for emergency sounded. We all proceed in assembly station and to be mustered by our officer in charge. The scenario was fire in the pump room and to rescue pump man inside the pump room. The support squad prepare for fire house for boundary cooling and the emergency squad wear there Fireman’s outfit and there breathing apparatus. I was assigned to join medical squad. Our obligation was give first aid to the victim or casualties.
They rescue the pump man (dummy pump man made of rugs) and as medical team we apply first aid to pump man. We put him to the stretcher and give him mouth to mouth resuscitator. A,B and C was apply ( airways breathing and circulation). Tilt the head to see if there is an obstruction in the mouth and B as breathing feel if the victim is breathing or he have pulse. If there is no breathing but he has a pulse we will apply the mouth to mouth resuscitation. 1 blow and 15 compressions were applied to the dummy victim.
Another alarm was sounded for Abandon ship drill. My designated life boat was located in port side of the ship (left side). My obligation was to assist in gripes, assist painter of the life boat and assist in lowering the embarkation ladder. Our chief mate explain that the life boat can lower even we are inside of the life boat incase of there is no possibility of lowering it outside. He finishes his explanation and asks some question to us. He told us that if we don’t have a question he will ask some question to us. He point at me and told me that “cadet now explain how we can lower the life boat even we are inside of the life boat. I was shocked on that moment and I just walk slowly in front of my crew mate and start explaining. I almost feel like I was drowned because I’m not ready on that moment. Luckily I have an experience on teaching on college school and I explain it very well. The chief mate told to me that its very well enough explanation. Our chief mate know that I already have 3rd mate license and he knows that I was teaching in college school before.

Port Of Klaipeda

It was May 31, 2008 at 2100 hrs. Our master announced to all deck departments that we are all must be stand by fore and aft because the pilot was onboard Ruby express. It was Sunday and I don’t have a work for that day so the Able seaman knock my door located in c deck of the ship (4th floor) and told me that stand by fore and aft. I was on a hurry to fix my self and wear may coverall and proceed to forward. Bosun was see me walking on the deck going to forward. They already prepare our line and told me woow I thought I see a chief officer walking toward to us and smiled at me. I smiled and I was whispering that I don’t have work on Sunday but you can call me if you need additional man on deck.
We fast the line of tug boat in center lead of the our ship. We use starboard winch and put the heaving line in the cap stand to heave the tug line. After we made the tug line fast to the bitts the chief officer calls the bridge that tug fast center lead forward. We already in the jetty and the shore man (mooring guys on port) asked if what kind our lines are. We told them we have wire here but we are having difficult in communication because they don’t know how to speak in English. The mooring guys are having difficult in connecting our lines. They don’t know how to connect it to there bollard in jetty. It takes 2 hours in 1 rope and we already make some noise in the forward just to take there attentions. Our bosun shouts weeeee!!!!! And the Russian jetty man shouts on us on his language we think that the jetty men are angry to us. There total strength in the jetty was 9 person and they can’t think faster. The poop deck guys are already finished and they call the bridge that they already all made fast and lay down the fire wire. About the forward we are in stand by and watching the jetty guys what we are doing. The captain called the chief officer to proceed to the ships office because the surveyors and loading master are onboard the ship. The chief officer told to bosun that you are now in charge here. Even the able seaman was assigned in the poop deck was here in the forward to look what’s happening. The 2nd mate proceeds to the forward to be in charge of us but same as it is we just stare at the jetty man and make some noise to attract the attention of the jetty man.
After 4 hours of waiting at last we already all made fast forward we clap our hands and shout woow!! We can rest now (for the off duty). My duty was 6pm to 12 am and all fast was declared in 1230am so it means I’m safe for the day for my duty 6am to 12pm. The sun set here in Lithuania klaipeda was 1200 am and sun will rise on 4 am in the morning.

Dad, being your Daughter has always make me feel special

Last June 10,2008, was my father's birthday. To be honest this is the first time in my life that I gave him a gift (since birth Huh!). So to be special I gave him a mug (with a words of Cool dad and hot I'll tell you later why I gave him that kind of mug) and a card with a poem;

Dad,
Being your
Daughter
has
Always
made me fell Special

As a child, calling you "Papa" was
something I did naturally. As a adult,
calling you "Dada" is
something I do with pride.
Being your daughter has always made
me fell special.Making others feel good seems
to be such a natural part of you.

I want to thank you for love.
Whether it's meant
extending an outstretched
hand or going that extra mile, you've always
been there for me. When times weren't at
their best, your gentle strength guided me.

When times were good, you knew what to say
and do. Your encouragement, support and
belief in me are just a few of the considerate
ways that you have constantly kept me
feeling loved.

Today I want to remind you that your
love has made an important different in my
life. Even though I'm grown up now, in
my heart you'll always be my "Dada".

And I also wrote a letter;

Papa,
Happy Birthday pa and Advance happy Father's day. As you can see, I gave you a mug and there are words of hot and cool dad. This 2 words symbolizes you as my Father. First from being hot, cause sometimes you become angry easily, your temper is so short. But sometimes you are a "Cool Dad" because when you are in the mood you dance with the music and I love it so much you look funny (hahaha). I also loves when you throw some jokes even though sometimes it is corny.
Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PA, wish you all the luck, may you have more birthdays to come and good health.

Your daughter,
May2x
