New Year Hurricane

Thursday, March 13, 2008

2 Christmas and 2 new years that is my record on my first contract in my vessel assignment. My memorable New Year aboard the ship was Jan 1, 2005. We prepare for the New Year celebration. We requested to our chief cook that we want all the Filipino dishes that will be served in New Year celebration. Appetizers, Main dish, dessert. We help our chief cook on cooking. We chopped, mix and arrange the food. Our captain give us liquor and its skies the limit for our New Year celebration.
We start our party at 7pm. We drink and sing in the day room. We dance like hell, with the help of the mess man he create the day room to a disco bar because he put some Christmas lights in the ceiling of the day room. When the slow music start all are in deep silence... We don't know what will happen than moment. The 2nd mates stand above the table and starting to dance like a striptease. We laugh to dead and shout cheering the 2nd mate more! More! Take it off! Take it off! Other crew shout yuck nakakasuka si sec hehehe, tama na please masakit na ang tyan ko kakatawa, ok na sec palitan na natin ang music baka matable kita hehehe! Then we stop the music we just play video game it’s a race a gran turismo game. If you will loose the race you will the one who will pay for the beer.

It's almost 12 midnight but we are already full. Before we eat the food we pray for a peaceful new year, zero accident and a smooth sailing on our voyage. Then the chow begin, we eat, eat and eat. Then the mess man prepares some stand up comedy for us. We like his show and the captain give 100 US dollar to the mess man for his prize. Then the next performer will be me, I play the guitar. I play rock and roll, love songs that make the heart of my crew mates melt. Our captain announces that ok boys it’s time to drink! We shout thank you very much sir! Happy New Year and buhay nanaman ang mga sunog baga boys! We celebrate the New Year till early morning.
While we are drinking and partying, we just notice the rolling, pawn ding, and yawing of the ship. We know that we can't experience rolling because we are fully loaded. Our cargo came from South Korea and we will discharge our cargo to Los Angeles. The rolling was very strong and we ask the officer on watch on the bridge. We ask if what is happening at the bridge. The officer told us that we are encountering strong hurricane at the Pacific Ocean. The officer told us that don't worry our ship can handle the rough water of the hurricane so nothing to worry. Luckily we pass the hurricane safe and sound.
